GRIEB & BENZINGER, 독일 브랜드 중 또 하나의 안드로메다... ETC(기타브랜드)

며칠 전 해외 포럼 눈팅 갔다가 또 하나의 엄청난 녀석을 보게 되어 여러분들과 간략하게 공유해 볼까 합니다. 

바로 이 녀석입니다. GRIEB & BENZINGER의 <Skeleton Minute Repeater Split-Seconds Chronograph - BLUE DANUBE>란 신모델인데요. 

이 녀석에 쓰인 무브먼트는 파텍 필립이 무려 120년 쯤 전에 티파니를 위해 제작해 준 역사적인 빈티지 무브를 수정해 탑재한 것입니다. 

미닛 리피터, 스플릿 세컨즈 크로노그래프 기능이 36.5미리 직경의 비교적 작은? 사이즈의 무브먼트 안에 들어간 굉장히 희소한 작품이죠.

Watch case

Solid 43 mm diameter platinum case with anti-reflective, domed sapphire crystal and flat sapphire crystal on case back. Pusher and crown are made of solid platinum and decorated with guilloché. Screw-in sapphire crystal case back and bezel. Navy blue alligator skin strap with platinum buckle. Hand-skeletonized Sterling silver dial with overlapping displays and decorated with original Breguet frosted finish.

Movement

The 26-jewel movement is based on an historical minute repeater with split-seconds chronograph and manually wound. It was made by Patek Philippe for Tiffany New York about 1890. With a diameter of only 36.5 mm, this tremendous assembly of complications is rare in such a small movement. The compensation screw balance with blued Breguet spring beats at 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour. Keeping in mind that this movement is already about 120 years old, it is doubtlessly a sensation and tribute to historic watchmaking.

The detailed restoration of the more than 400 components of this extraordinary, complicated movement required intense attention. Every single component had to be disassembled, treated and restored, some had to be entirely replaced and, of course, they all had to be reassembled to form one functional unit after treatment.

The base plate was first hand-skeletonized and hand-guilloché before being coated with the blue platinum developed by GRIEB & BENZINGER. The three-quarter plate was also hand-skeletonized and guilloché, coated with rhodium and rose gold. Every single bridge was skeletonized, guilloché and rhodium-plated, the hand-engraved balance cock was rhodium- and rose gold-plated. The visible spring barrel was guilloché. Even the wheels were guilloché, and the heads of all steel screws were polished by hand and classically tempered a cornflower blue over an open flame. All strike train parts including two polished steel hammers with two gongs, levers and springs were polished and beveled.

히스토리컬한 무브에 워치 커스터마이징의 세계적인 대가인 요헨 벤징거(Jochen Benzinger)가 

손수 인그레이빙을 다 하고, 플레이트 전체 및 다이얼까지 직접 엔진턴 기계를 돌려가며 며칠에 걸쳐 완성한 작품인 것입니다. 

이 시계의 아름다움이나 제작의 수고로움이 잘 감이 안 오시는 회원님들께서는 위 첨부하는 동영상도 한번 보시길 권해드립니다. 

벤징거 아저씨가 얼마나 정성스럽게 무브 및 다이얼을 코스메틱 하시는 지를요. 

더불어 워치메이커인 헤르만 그리브(Hermann Grieb)의 수고스러운 부품 조립 및 조정 과정들을 말입니다.(부품 개수만도 400여개에 달합니다.)

맨 좌측이 GRIEB & BENZINGER의 공동 설립자이자 이 브랜드의 워치메이커 역할을 담당하고 있는 헤르만 그리브(Hermann Grieb)입니다.

그리고 맨 우측의 백발의 인상좋은 아저씨가 이 브랜드의 디자인 및 피니싱 전반의 작업을 담당하고 있는 요헨 벤징거(Jochen Benzinger)입니다. 

가운데 빡빡이 아저씨는 사실 별로 중요하지 않은? 깍두기인 셈인데요. 아니, 넝담이구요 ㅋㅋ 

벤징거 아저씨랑 절친 사이로서 이 브랜드의 디자인(즉 벤징거 아저씨 사이드킥 역할^^) 및 마케팅을 담당하고 있는 게오르그 바트코비악(Georg Bartkowiak)입니다. 

이렇게 세 명의 팀이 주축이 되어 독일 그라페나우(Grafenaw)에 둥지를 튼 GRIEB & BENZINGER. 

벤징거 아저씨는 이 브랜드 설립 이전에도 세계적인 시계 커스터마이저로 원체 유명하셨죠. 

IWC나 크로노스위스 같은 브랜드의 일부 익스클루시브한 한정판 등에 그의 손길을 엿볼 수 있는 작품들이 있었습니다. 

벤징거 아저씨의 작업 방식을 대략적이나 엿볼 수 있는 관련 동영상. 

벤징거 아저씨는 아직까지도 100년도 넘은 엔진턴 기계로 일일이 수동으로 기요셰 패턴을 만드는데요.(이는 브레게에서 시작된 원조 방식 그대로를 고수하는 것임) 

레이저 커팅으로도 만들기 힘든 각종 복잡한 형태의 기요셰 패턴을 전통적인 수작업으로 일일이 다 완성한다는 게 그저 놀랍기만 합니다. 

뿐만 아니라 무브 상 하단 플레이트 및, 밸런스 브릿지, 다이얼 등에 손수 인그레이빙을 넣고, 스켈레터나이징(skeletonizing) 작업을 추가하기도 하지요. 

이런 작업들은 겉으로 보기엔 단순해 보이지만, 고도의 장인정신이 요구되는 작업입니다. 밑그림도 없이 패턴을 일일이 다 찍고 만들고 다듬고, 

인그레이빙도 어느 한곳 어긋남 없이 섬세하게 한 호흡에 완성지어야 하기 때문입니다. 

실제로 그는 그가 애초 기술을 익히고 사사를 받은 Pforzheim이란 기술 학교에서 현재 교수를 맡고 있기도 하답니다. 

Jochen Benzinger (*1961) had a good teacher in the guild master of Pforzheim where he did his apprenticeship in engraving, finishing by receiving a diploma and an award for being especially talented. Looking for a new challenge he taught himself the craft of engine turning, today no longer offered as an apprenticeship. He was aided in his endeavors by some older specialists still active in Pforzheim.

In 1985 he took over the company Kollmar, which had already been in existence for five generations and had an excellent reputation as an engine turning workshop. Among Benzinger’s many machines one can find very old pieces, rescued from companies that went bankrupt and were in the act of throwing them away. These machines have made their way either to the Technical Museum or to Jochen Benzinger, who has carefully restored them and now uses them in his daily work.

벤징거 아저씨의 기존 작품 중 <Omega 505 Jubilee version> 이란 모델입니다. 

이름 그대로 오메가의 505 칼리버를 가져다 엄청나게 수정한 무브를 사용한 작품이지요. 

근데 왠지 다이얼은 크로노스위스의 카이로스가 너무나 연상됩니다. ㅋㅋㅋ

유니타스 6498 무브를 가져다 레귤레이터 형태로 수정한 작품입니다. 전체 WG구요.(벤징거 아저씨는 골드나 플레티늄 시계만 취급함 ㅠㅠ)

위 모델은 시계 매니아라면 척 보면 아시겠죠? ㅋㅋ 넹... IWC의 Jones caliber를 가져다 커스터마이징한 제품입니다. 엄청 나네요. ㅋㅋㅋ

또 다른 6498 스켈레톤 무브와 다이얼을 엿볼 수 있는 시계입니다. 굉장히 유니크한 다이얼이 시선을 확 끕니다. 

벤징거 아저씨가 만드는 모델 중 가장 고가 라인이자 몇 점 만들지도 않는 아뜰리에(BENZINGER Atelier)의 <Coat of Arms of the Netherlands>란 작품입니다. 

흔해 빠진 싸구려 무브로 인식되고 있는 범용 6498 무브가 코스메틱 하기에 따라 얼마나 아트가 될 수 있는지를 보여주는 끝판왕인 셈입니다. ㅋㅋ 

중국 시장을 겨냥한 듯한 역시나 아뜰리에 라인의 <Chinese Dragon> 모델입니다. 대박이죠? ㅋㅋ 역시나 6498 베이스 무브고, 

올해 용의 해를 겨냥해서 만들었다고 아예 제품 소개에 써있더군요. ㄷㄷ(나름 영민하신 벤징거 아저씨ㅋㅋ) 이 모델은 아마 한화 추산시 기본 5천만원 이상은 할 듯.

위 모델은 벤징거 작품 중에선 대중적으로도 많이 알려진(또 그나마 많이 팔린 ㅋㅋ) 블러섬(BLOSSOM)이란 시계의 무브먼트 사진입니다.

마지막으로 위 시계는 벤징거 아저씨 단독 작품은 아니고, 그리브 아저씨랑 함께 제작한 컬렉션 중 <Blue Whirlwind>란 별칭을 가진 모델입니다. 

역시나 맨 앞에 소개한 제품과 마찬가지로 전체 플레티늄으로 제작됐구요. 43미리 케이스에, 파텍 필립의 투어빌론 칼리버인 R TO 27 PS에 

아름다운 인그레이빙과 스켈레터나이징 작업들을 거쳤습니다. 다이얼이나 세부 퀄리티 같은 것까지 고려하면, 

해당 무브가 들어간 파텍 필립 모델과 견주어도 오히려 훨씬 더 고급스럽고 아름다운 시계인 듯 싶습니다.

Movement

The world’s first watch powered by a visible tourbillon movement by Patek Philippe. The 28-jewel movement consisting of 336 parts is based on the manually wound famous Patek Philippe Caliber R TO 27 PS. The Gyromax balance beats at 21,600 semi-oscillations per hour.

This amazing movement well displays the intense workmanship associated with the engraving and guilloché as well as the skeletonized modifications of this unique tourbillon minute repeater’s plates and bridges. The base plate was skeletonized to show off the Tourbillon through the dial. The base plate is also coated with blue platinum, a signature element of GRIEB & BENZINGER.

The original gold drive wheel for the tourbillon was replaced by a mysterious wheel. The movement is completely new-decorated. Every single part was treated, skeletonized, guilloché and rhodium- or rose gold-plated. The visible spring barrel and the wheels were guilloché.

All strike train parts including two polished steel hammers with two gongs, levers and springs were polished and beveled. The movement was disassembled several times before finally being reassembled in order to guarantee all functions, even those applying to the additional modifications.
